| Presenter's Short Biography | Dr. David Marvel is a musician and educator based in Oklahoma City. He teaches music theory, aural skills, and private brass lessons at Rose State College, where he also directs the Community Wind Band, Jazz Band, and Orchestra. He holds a BM and MM in Trumpet Performance from Appalachian State University, an MM in Music Theory from the University of Tennessee, and a DMA in Brass Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Oklahoma. |

| Session Title | Why They Don’t Remember What You Taught Them (and What to Do About It) |
| Session Description | Why do students forget rhythms, notes, terms, or entire lessons despite your best efforts? Modern research shows that memory is not about storing and retrieving information. It is an active, reconstructive process shaped by attention, context, emotion, and repetition. This session translates current cognitive science into practical strategies for music educators. We will explore what helps and what hinders memory formation, how to design more effective rehearsal and practice routines, and how to support long-term retention of musical knowledge and skills. Understanding how memory actually works not only helps students learn more effectively, it also helps us become more efficient and reflective as educators and lifelong learners. |
