How, during our rehearsals, can we make time to help students understand the artistic impact of music when time limitations demand that we focus on producing a characteristic sound, articulation, or the full value of a dotted half note? This session will provide ideas for instrumental music educators to connect the teaching of “craft,“ such as posture, technique, or reading notation to “art,“ the making of music that can be performed and perceived as an aesthetic transformation - a mirroring of life and humanity. Those in attendance can also expect to be given the tools to discover how to connect art and craft for their students in ways that express each teacher’s own journey as musicians.#okmea #okmeafall2026

Anxiety is a common challenge among adolescent students, particularly in performance-based settings like choral ensembles. The middle and high school years are marked by significant developmental changes that can exacerbate feelings of self-doubt, performance anxiety, and social pressures. In this session, Baughamn will explore how these developmental stages intersect with the experience of anxiety in musical ensembles and provide music educators with evidence-based strategies to support their students. By understanding the unique cognitive, emotional, and social challenges faced by adolescents, educators can foster a more supportive and inclusive environment that helps students thrive both personally and musically. #okmea #okmeafall2026
