What an impact Jerry has had on OkMEA! We are blessed that he steered the ship for this many years! Congratulations on your retirement, Jerry!"It is not an exaggeration to say that without Jerry, we would not have OkMEA," said OkMEA President Leah McDonald. Attention members! HB2258 is a revamp of the fine arts/ag bill from last year (HB3655), but it has expanded the ag options to replace the 1 high school fine arts credit needed to graduate. Currently, the one high school credit needed to graduate is the only Pk-12 arts requirement in Oklahoma. This requirement is part of the reason medium and smaller districts keep their band programs or their art programs going. Without this requirement, districts across the state would have no incentive to support the programs they have or replace teachers as they leave. Larger districts would also be able to pare back offerings (drama and dance) as they wouldn't need as many options for students because the graduation requirement would be gone. Please contact your state representatives to let them know your thoughts about this bill.
