Presenter's Short Biography

Mr. Williams serves as the assistant director and co-manager of the Oklahoma Youth Jazz Ensemble. He graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelor's in Music Education (Instrumental) and a Master's in Jazz Studies (Performance). During the summer, he has taught at the internationally recognized UCO Jazz Camp and the OU Summer Jazz Collective. He is currently a doctoral student at the University of Oklahoma, pursuing his degree in music education with an emphasis on conducting. In addition, he is an active clinician in the Oklahoma City Metro area.

Before working at Capps, Mr. Williams was a woodwind performer from piccolo to bassoon, ensemble leader, conductor, and music arranger for the Quantico Marine Corps Band and 145th Oklahoma Army National Guard Band. While in the Marine Corps, he toured with the Marine Corps Jazz Orchestra, performing baritone saxophone. He also continues performing and playing woodwind instruments throughout the United States as a freelance musician for concerts, weddings, church services, musicals, and other events. He also performed with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Temptations, Four Tops, Diane Schuur, John Daversa, and many others.

Session Title"Elevating Jazz Combos: Proven Strategies for Competitive Performance and Authentic Jazz Traditions"
Session Description

This session aims to mentor school jazz combo programs, helping them create competitive stage performances while preserving the traditions of the jazz idiom. I will share a proven formula that has benefited many jazz combos nationwide. Attendees will learn to select appropriate instrumentation and music, incorporate more improvisation, and develop effective lesson plans. This session is designed to support directors in creating high-achieving jazz combos, whether their students have one year of experience or more.
