| Presenter's Short Biography | David Pope serves an Associate Professor of Music Education at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Performing Arts. He has presented string pedagogy clinics and his research at the European String Teachers Congress, the ASTA National Conference, The Midwest Clinic, and numerous regional/state conferences. He is the current String Research Journal editor and recently served as a co-author for Sound Orchestra and a co-editor for Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra (Vol. 4). |

| Session Title | Cultivating the Bow Arm to Improve Tone Quality & Musicianship |
| Session Description | In most beginning, intermediate, and advanced school orchestra classrooms, many string students focus on their left hand over their right hand because they think the left hand is more challenging to learn and more important. As a result, students neglect to fully develop their right-hand and bow technique, which prevents them from successfully performing in different parts of the bow with a high-level tone quality, various articulations, and varying tone colors. Master teachers understand the importance of developing students’ right-hand skills, and they know they must isolate individual right-hand skills in simple exercises before their students combine them in more difficult settings. Developing an understanding of those skills in isolation and learning to combine them is crucial to the long-term development and success of string musicians. This session will provide various strategies that string teachers can implement immediately in their daily rehearsals. I will discuss and show how to isolate and teach individual right-hand skills through call-and-response and written exercises. Topics will include the fundamentals of tone production, performing in different parts of the bow, producing various articulations, and playing with varying tone colors to match the appropriate musical style. Discussed strategies can be used with musicians in beginning, intermediate, or advanced ensembles. Attendees will leave the session with exercises they can implement immediately in their classrooms. |
