| Presenter's Short Biography | David Pope serves an Associate Professor of Music Education at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Performing Arts. He has presented string pedagogy clinics and his research at the European String Teachers Congress, the ASTA National Conference, The Midwest Clinic, and numerous regional/state conferences. He is the current String Research Journal editor and recently served as a co-author for Sound Orchestra and a co-editor for Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra (Vol. 4). |

| Session Title | Developing Students’ Listening Skills to Improve Intonation and Ensemble Playing |
| Session Description | No matter their ability level, musicians must develop a discerning ear if their band or orchestra is going to perform with good intonation. Successful teachers know they must remove themselves from the learning process so their students can acquire the skills required to become self-sufficient musicians. For this to occur, students must cultivate their ability to identify and correct their individual, sectional, and ensemble’s intonation issues without the teacher’s guidance. Fostering those skills is crucial to the long-term development and success of young, intermediate, and advanced musicians. Not only do they help developing musicians improve their performance skills, but they also increase the efficiency of daily rehearsals. This session will provide various strategies that band and orchestra teachers can implement immediately in their daily rehearsals to improve students’ intonation. Participants will learn practical exercises that help students develop their ability to self-identify and correct pitch errors. Topics will include teaching and refining listening skills, fixing out-of-tune notes, learning to balance the ensemble, isolating and fixing intonation issues in performance repertoire, tuning inner lines, and playing with expressive intonation. Covered strategies can be used with band and string musicians in beginning, intermediate, or advanced ensembles. Attendees will leave the session with exercises they can implement immediately in their classrooms. |
