| Presenter's Short Biography | Derrick Bready is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, MO. Prior to MSSU, he was the Director of Choral Studies and Music Education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, OK teaching choral ensembles, secondary choral methods, choral literature, and the Aural Skills rotations. Derrick is a 20-year Texas choral music veteran with successful teaching experience at the high school and junior high levels. His award-winning choirs have been invited ensembles to state and regional conferences of the Texas Music Educators Association and the Southwestern American Choral Directors Association in 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014. In 2015, the Pearland Kantorei Madrigals Choir won First Place at the prestigious American Classics Madrigal and Chamber Choir Festival in San Antonio and the following year served as the featured Honor Choir. Derrick holds degrees in music education, conducting, and sacred music from the University of Texas at San Antonio, University of Houston, and Baylor University. His teachers and mentors have included Drs. John Silantien, Gary Mabry, Charles Hausmann, Lynne Gackle, Will McLean, and Kristina Caswell-MacMullen. In addition to his professional and educational pursuits, Derrick has faithfully served Baptist, Methodist, and Lutheran congregations as minister of music and director of music and worship. In addition, he sang professionally for seven seasons with the Grammy-award winning Houston Chamber Choir. |

| Session Title | Stranger Sings: Unlocking the “Upside Down” fears of Sightreading in the Choral Rehearsal |
| Session Description | After 20 years in the public classroom, Dr. Bready shares the tools and strategies that have successfully transformed his ensembles to "The Sight-Reading Dead" to "America's Next Top Sight-Reader." In this TV-themed interactive session, choral directors can gain new ideas or reinforce old ones that will build smart choral musicians that can read and be "Pitch Perfect." With sharing of games, techniques, and resources, choirs that establish a "Law and Order" to their sight-reading system will see results, better readers, and better musicians. There is nothing to fear in the "Upside Down" of the sightreading choral rehearsal. |
