| Presenter's Short Biography | Peter Markes (Marcus) lives in Oklahoma City with his wife, Kris, and their two boys, Patrick and Vincent. Since 2020 he has taught on faculty at his alma mater, Oklahoma City University, as associate professor and head of music education and faculty advisor for OCU's NAfME Collegiate Chapter. Prior to that he taught orchestra in the Edmond Public Schools for 15 years, taking the Edmond North Orchestra to a performance at the Midwest Clinic in 2012 and two tours to Carnegie Hall. In 2013, he was selected as the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year. In addition to teaching, Markes owns his own small business specializing in music performance and education consulting. As a performer, he has partnered with Oklahoma’s Musical Ambassador, Kyle Dillingham, for 30 years, and together they have performed and taught in over 30 countries on five continents, played on the Grand Ole Opry, and released several recordings in the Americana and folk-pop genres. Most recently they toured Oklahoma’s Sister-State, Gansu Province, China in September 2023. As a solo artist, Markes has released two albums, I Have a Dream (2018) and My Father’s Age (2024), available to stream worldwide. Aside from sharing music, he enjoys watching movies and building Lego with his family and rearranging the dishwasher after them. | Session Title | This Idiot's Guide to Large Group Contest |
| Session Description | Based on his experiences as a large program orchestra director, contest site co-host, band, orchestra & choir parent, and also a large-group adjudicator and clinician, Markes will share tips and tricks about the big event – the large-group contest. Included will be ideas on music selection, scheduling extra rehearsals, best practices in the warm-up, concert, and sight-reading rooms, advocacy elements to get the most out of the investment, and even some pointers that can make school group travel a little less stressful. Whether a career teacher or considering to take your students to a contest for the first time, there will surely be a good idea for each attendee. |
