| Presenter's Short Biography | Richard Canter serves as band director for Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to his role at Walnut Hills, he serves as music director of the Cincinnati Junior Youth Wind Ensemble at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Richard has presented clinics on band pedagogy throughout the United States, including two presentations at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and music education conferences in 29 states. Throughout his twenty-five years as an educator, Richard has been an advocate for music education, serving four years as District 14 President of the Ohio Music Education Association. His passion for helping students reach their highest goals in music led to creating the Scale & Rhythm Chunks program, a teaching tool that is used by bands throughout the United States and internationally. The Chunks program is endorsed by Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser as "exactly what is wanted and needed... an idea whose time has come." In 2024, Richard joined the esteemed roster of KHS America Academic Alliance affiliated educators, as an Educational Artist, representing Jupiter Band Instruments and the entire family of KHS educational brands. Richard’s honors and achievements include being a winner of the MENC Music Composition National Competition, the Mark S. Kelly Senior Marcher Award, Finneytown Local School District Educator of the Year, and the Hamilton County "Celebrate Excellence" Award. He was inducted into the Ross High School Hall of Fame in 2022 and Finneytown High School Hall of Fame in 2025. |

| Session Title | Beginning Band Basics: Strategies to Energize, Empower and Inspire Today’s Beginning Band Student |
| Session Description | The first few years of band instruction are crucial in setting students up for long-term success, but they’re often filled with challenges— balancing diverse skill levels, managing limited instructional time, all while managing the emotional challenges many students face in today's complex educational landscape. In this activity-based session, the clinician will share strategies for embedding social emotional learning & differentiating instruction in order to prevent poor performance habits & motivate all levels of learners to reach their highest potential. Additionally, we will discuss innovative techniques for teaching dynamics and articulation, as well as strategies to improve rhythm & note reading designed to improve your students’ sight-reading abilities and overall musical literacy. This session is designed to improve individual student growth, retention of knowledge by students, and overall retention of students in your program. |
