| Presenter's Short Biography | Dr. Malcolm Burke is the Director of Bands at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where he is the director of band activities, conductor of the NSU Wind Ensemble and teaches music education courses. Prior to coming to NSU, Burke served as visiting professor of music at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. At Concordia he conducted the Concordia Band, taught conducting lessons, and hosted the 2026 High School Honor Band with guest composer/conductor Adrian Sims. Before his graduate studies, Burke served as Director of High School Orchestras for five years at Mason City High School in Mason City, Iowa. In that position, the orchestra participated in the consortium commission of Shelley Hanson’s The Beauty That Remains and received an invitation in 2019 to the University of Northern Iowa’s Orchestra Invitational. Burke was selected as a 2024 Reynolds Conducting Fellow at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic and has served as the guest conductor for the Neoteric Chamber Winds and the UMBAS Summer Band. He earned his DMA in conducting from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, MA in instrumental conducting from the University of Central Florida, and BM in Music Education from the University of Northern Iowa. Burke is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, National Band Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Mu Alpha and is an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma. |

| Session Title | So you want to go to grad school? – A Conductor’s Guide |
| Session Description | Pursuing a graduate degree can be an exhilarating time in one’s life, whether you are a recent graduate, a young professional, or an experienced teacher looking to advance your knowledge. However, the preparation to apply for graduate programs can be an intimidating venture. In this session, the clinician who recently completed two conducting graduate degrees will share stories of investigating and applying to graduate programs. Various topics will be discussed, including factors in choosing a school that is a good fit, writing professional documents, preparing for the interviews and auditions, and transitioning to being a graduate student. The clinician will share additional insights learned in graduate programs as time allows. Attendees will have a chance to engage in a discussion focused on their experiences and concerns. This dynamic Q&A session will create an opportunity to gain valuable insights from peers and experts alike. |
