Session TitleFrom One Stick To Two: A Band Director’s Guide to Percussion
Session Description

Many band directors are trained primarily as wind players, yet are expected to teach, diagnose, and organize percussion sections every day. This session is designed to provide non-percussionist band directors with practical tools to develop more confident, consistent, and musical percussionists in the concert band setting. Topics will include basic stroke types, grip, sound production, mallet technique, rolls, timpani fundamentals, auxiliary percussion, instrument setup, equipment organization, part assignments, and common rehearsal challenges. There will also be a discussion of the decisions that need to be made when studying percussion parts in your score. Attendees will leave with immediately usable strategies for improving percussion instruction, rehearsal efficiency, and overall ensemble sound.
