Session Proposals

Marc Decker, DMA is an Associate Professor of Music and the Associate Director of Bands/Director of Athletic Bands at Florida Atlantic University, where he directs the Marching Owls, “Parliament Sound” Pep Band, and Symphony Band, and teaches courses in music education and conducting. A native of the Midwest, he began his career as a high school band director in Michigan and has also taught in Washington, DC, and Oklahoma. Dr. Decker has served as an adjudicator, guest conductor, and clinician throughout the Midwest and Southeastern United States. He has presented nationally at professional development and research conferences, and published on topics including wind band repertoire, conducting, music teacher preparation, and pedagogy. An advocate for music education at all levels, Dr. Decker is a Past President of the Florida College Music Educators Association and remains active in numerous professional organizations.

Rehearsal time is one of a director’s most limited and valuable resources. From the initial sight-reading to the final dress rehearsal, every moment can feel urgent and compressed. This session presents 20 practical, immediately applicable strategies to streamline rehearsal structure, improve instructional clarity, and maximize student engagement. Participants will explore ways to optimize rehearsal logistics, establish clear and measurable goals, and implement efficient systems for communicating with students and parents. The session will also emphasize fostering a collaborative rehearsal environment that encourages student ownership, accountability, and musical independence. Attendees will leave with a concrete toolkit of strategies designed to enhance ensemble performance, strengthen daily rehearsal outcomes, and reduce unnecessary stress for directors.
