Session Proposals

Adrianne DeKlotz has taught elementary music in the rural town of Chandler, Oklahoma for the last 16 years. She has mostly worked with Pre-K – 2nd grade in the classroom and codirects an afterschool choir with older elementary students. She accompanies for the Chandler music department and loves getting to watch and be a part of students’ musical journeys all the way through! She received her National Kodάly Certification from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, and has loved the structure and musicianship that Kodάly has brought to her music classroom. A native of Idaho, Adrianne holds a Bachelors in Music Education from Idaho State University and a Masters in Music Education with emphasis in Piano Pedagogy from The University of Oklahoma.

In so many cultures and regions there is little to no line between the arts. Music makes us move and express and participate. So many visual artists have been inspired by music and musicians/composers by visual artists, yet how do we make it accessible to a young audience? In my session I want to explore how to incorporate looking at visual art in the elementary classroom as a way to expand a student’s connection to how they listen to music. By exploring looking at art for things like perspective, use of color and mediums, technique and overall expression I will show how we can make connections not only to the history between art and music but also in how learning to look at art thoughtfully helps us also listen to music more thoughtfully. I plan to present the connections between Impressionist art and music, how we can tie looking at brushstrokes to movement activities, tying historical paintings and photographs to important songs of culture (Possible Song Connections: Lift Every Voice and Sing – Song and Sculpture, Norman Rockwell and Patriotism), and using illustrations in the books we use already to draw student’s attention to perspective, detail, and conveying emotion and meaning.
