Job Goal
The Band Director is responsible for developing and leading a comprehensive middle school and high school band
program, including marching band and concert band. The successful candidate will instruct students in musical
performance and theory, oversee all band-related activities, and foster a positive, productive learning environment.
Qualifications
● Valid Oklahoma teaching certificate with an Instrumental Music endorsement.
● Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field.
● Proven experience as a band director or assistant band director, preferably in a school setting.
● Proficiency in instrumental music, conducting, and music theory.
● Strong communication and organizational skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and parents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
○ Instruction and Performance:
○ Direct and lead all middle school and high school student instrumental ensembles, including marching
band and concert band.
○ Instruct students in music theory, performance techniques, and instrumental proficiency.
○ Select appropriate musical repertoire for all ensembles.
○ Prepare and direct students for all performances, including concerts, pep rallies, football games, and
parades.
● Program Administration:
○ Oversee all administrative tasks related to the band program, including inventory of instruments,
uniforms, and music libraries.
○ Secure and supervise transportation for all band events.
○ Manage the program's budget and coordinate fundraising activities.
○ Advise and support the band booster club.
● Student Development and Management:
○ Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to ensure a productive learning atmosphere.
○ Monitor student academic eligibility and enforce participation requirements.
○ Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with parents regarding student
progress.
○ Cultivate a positive and supportive environment that encourages student growth and a love for music.
● Collaboration and Professional Growth:
○ Collaborate with other staff members and participate in faculty meetings as required.
○ Stay current with developments in music education by attending workshops, seminars, and professional
meetings.
Working Conditions: This is a ten-month contract position with a salary and work days established by the Board of
Education. The role requires supervising some after-school and weekend activities, including rehearsals, sectionals,
and performances. This is a physically active role that may involve standing for extended periods and lifting up to 25
pounds.
